Rose Byrne Wins Her First Golden Globe in Tears Shares Surprising Reason Husband Bobby Cannavale Missed the Ceremony

Rose Byrne Wins Her First Golden Globe in Tears, Reveals Quirky Reason Husband Bobby Cannavale Missed the Ceremony

Aussie actress Rose Byrne has finally claimed her first Golden Globe. The 46-year-old broke down as she accepted the Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for her lead role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

The Bridesmaids star looked visibly shocked by the win, admitting she hadn’t prepared a speech as she stepped onto the stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Rose attended the ceremony with her brother, George, revealing the quirky reason her husband, US actor Bobby Cannavale, wasn’t there.

“Thanks to my husband Bobby. He isn’t here because we’re getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey,” she joked.

She then thanked the film’s producers while poking fun at its modest budget:

“I didn’t prepare anything, but—I didn’t sing in this movie, guys. Thank you so much my fellow nominees, I just can’t believe I’m here. Thank you to A24 and our brilliant producers—Josh Safdie, Eli Bush, Ronnie Bronstein, Sarah Murphy, Ryan, everyone at A24. Thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50! This is a tiny film, so being up here is huge. And my brother’s my date! Thanks, George. And thanks to my mum and dad, who bought Paramount Plus so they could watch the Golden Globes from Sydney.”

Rose beat out strong contenders including Cynthia Erivo (Wicked For Good) and Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue). She stunned on the red carpet in a plunging neon green Chanel gown with a flowing train, paired with statement Chanel jewelry. Her glossy brunette waves and flawless makeup completed the elegant look.

The win positions Rose as a frontrunner for her first Oscar nomination for the intense psychological drama, in which she portrays a mother struggling to hold her life together. If she wins, she would become just the third Australian actress to take home the Best Actress Oscar.

The Golden Globe wasn’t the only memorable moment for Rose recently. Last week at the Film Critics Circle Awards in New York, she faced a toe-curling moment when presenter Ethan Hawke called her out on stage for a decades-old two-star Goodreads review she wrote of his first novel, The Hottest State.

Posted in 2010 under the username “Rose,” the review read: “Released 13 years ago so I am a bit behind but found it lazing around on set and was a lovely easy read for a couple of days. It’s kind of like a Ryan Adams song but not as good.”

Clips from the ceremony show Rose visibly embarrassed as she accepted her award, while Hawke couldn’t stop laughing at the memory.
